Bastides and medieval villages

SARLAT, historical capital of the Périgord Noir: this medieval village, built around a Benedictine abbey from the Carolingian era, developed considerably during the Renaissance thanks to its economic activity (fairs and markets). SARLAT has kept its authentic character in its architecture.

MONPAZIER, BEAUMONT, DOMME, MOLIERES: these "bastides" are "new" towns, founded on behalf of the King of France or England during the 13th and 14th centuries. They were built in squares according to a new concept marking the break with the city organised around a castle.
