Bastides and medieval villages

SARLAT, historical capital of the Périgord Noir, is a medieval town built around a Benedictine abbey from the Carolingian period, developed considerably during the Renaissance thanks to its economic activity (fairs and markets). SARLAT has retained its authentic character and architecture.

MONPAZIER, BEAUMONT, DOMME, MOLIERES: these "bastides" are "new" towns, founded on behalf of the King of France or England during the 13th and 14th centuries. They are built in squares according to a new conception marking the break with the city organized around a castle.
